SpecML: A Foundational Transformer-Based Model for Interpreting Galaxy Spectra and Predicting Source Classification and Galaxy Property Estimations

Seminar Via Zoom

Carmen Martinez Harris

In this talk, Carmen Martinez Harris presents SpecML, a self-supervised foundation model that learns general representations of galaxy spectra from unlabelled data and transfers them to tasks where labels are scarce. The model adapts the OmniSpectra architecture for use with JWST NIRSpec prism spectra drawn from the DAWN archive, extending these representations to redshift recovery, source classification, and galaxy property estimation.
